What We Do
Goals UAE is a community based, volunteer initiative which is enhancing the connection between children with autism and the greater community of Abu Dhabi. Not surprisingly, Goals UAE came forth from a need. Two Abu Dhabi mothers struggled to find ways to keep their active young boys busy. Both boys are on the autism spectrum and in spite of being healthy and bright they did not fit into the multitude of classes and lessons offered in and around Abu Dhabi. This needed to change.
The number of individuals with autism worldwide is estimated at 1 in 68. It is thought to be as high as 1 in 50 in the UAE. These staggering numbers must alert us all to the fact that, as a community we need to do more to ensure that this large portion of our population has the opportunity to develop into active members of society. Abu Dhabi has a lot to gain from our children with autism.
Awareness alone will not produce engagement. Therapy alone will not prepare children with autism to take a place in the community. As the UAE government provides more advanced educational and medical facilities the opportunities for children with autism within the UAE improve dramatically each year. Now is the time to prepare the community for these children; trained, educated and ready to engage with and contribute to our vibrant city.
Currently Goals UAE is offering football and music. New programs are being developed so that a year round offering will be provided with a balance of sports programs and the arts. As a long-term objective, Goals UAE seeks to develop the skills and interest of children with autism and foster talent. We are actively working to develop vocational avenues for the autism community of Abu Dhabi.
